JOB SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, manages caseload of assigned students and working with those students through degree or certificate completion. This includes checkpoint advising as students reach benchmarks towards their degree goals. Monitors students schedules each semester to ensure they follow their Guided Pathway and follows up with the students to make sure they register for each term. Coordinates the tutorial services for the Student Support Services Program. Select and train the instructional staff. Coordinates the identification, recruitment, and selection of the Student Support Services (SSS) Program participants. Provides advising services for program participants in academic, personal, transfer, social, and career areas. Coordinates and refers participants to college and community resources. Prepares a Personal Education Plan (PEP) for each participant. Works with and supervising the peer tutors, peer mentors, and ASC tutors to provide assistance to the participants. Assists the Program Director with the coordination of reports and activities.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with the Program Director to provide appropriate services to enhance the college experience of each participant.
Provides participants with advisement and encouragement in securing financial assistance, tutoring, academic advising, and services designed to retain participants through graduation and transfer;
Coordinates the Student Support Services (SSS) tutorial workshops. Provides participants with academic support and tutorial services, including recruitment, training and supervising peer tutors, peer mentors and ASC tutors.
Assists the Program Director in the coordination of transfer services, cultural enrichment activities and educational field trips;
Contacts participants for tutoring needs. Assists with the tracking of participant's progress by maintaining accurate tutoring records;
Monitors the early alert system.
Schedules PEP appointments with each participant. Communicates with faculty through E-mail messages to document participant performance (e.g. Academic progress, low test scores, absences) and intervening as necessary.
Attends college meetings and Interfaces with other college programs and departments as needed;
Prepares and analyzes reports;
Completes all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in counseling, social work or a related area;
Minimum of two (2) years previous experience working with disadvantaged student populations;
Knowledge of higher education (2-4 year colleges and universities) educational programs; tutorial programs, and the needs of at-risk students;
Model the values and mission of the Indian River State College and the Student Support Services/TRIO programs by welcoming inclusion of all qualified students;
Strong leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills;
Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written;
Proven experience with Microsoft Office and Windows applications to include competence in word processing, database, and spreadsheets;
Proven ability to understand and to solve problems related to student academic and personal issues;
Ability to empathize and work with persons representing culturally diverse backgrounds.
Dependability/reliability with assigned tasks and responsibilities;
Preference shall be given to the following: Master's degree;
Background similar to that of the students served by the Student Support Services (SSS) Program
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as light work involving lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. Even though the weight lifted may be very little, a job is in this category when it requires a good deal of walking or standing, or when it involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. To be considered capable of performing a full or wide range of light work, you must have the ability to do substantially all of these activities. If someone can do light work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary work, unless there are additional limiting factors such as loss of fine dexterity or inability to sit for long periods of time.
